Text Box: The Principle
Sports Orthotics (Orthoses) are in shoe devices that alter forces between the ground and the muscular-skeletal structures. With careful planning the Pedorthist can make a device that will redistribute pressure and alter bone joint alignments to reduce stress on specific tissues. Since the forces of sports activities are greater than normal occupational and lifestyle conditions, sports orthotic formulations must sometimes be milder and more flexible.
The Practical
Using layered materials of different densities and properties your Pedorthist can craft a device which will be both supportive and cushioning. Information about your activities, level of proficiency, footwear, body type, goals and training regimen will all be factored into the design of an appliance that will be as individual as you.

Text Box: What Injuries can be treated?
Text Box: Sports injuries are often the result of overuse, over training or muscle imbalances. Some of the conditions we see and treat are:

Some of these conditions will present as solitary ailments while others will combine as compensating mechanisms producing secondary problems. Often a combination of treatments and techniques are required to find relief. Your Pedorthist can make recommendations to improve the speed of recovery.
Text Box: Footwear and Other Treatments
Text Box: Your Canadian Certified Pedorthist has an extensive knowledge of sports footwear their properties and how they interact with in shoe devices. He/she can guide you in selection of footwear or counsel in how a change of shoes may benefit your training or event. There are other things to consider too. Stockings, diet, exercise, stretching and cross training are all issues your Pedorthist can talk to you about and help locate resources for.
Often an orthotic may not be the best choice in addressing a sports related injury. The possibility of a change in how you approach your activity or a recommendation to a different Health Care Professional who is better suited to help is always an option. Since the Pedorthist will be consulting on referral from your physician they can inform you of the various possibilities so you can go back to your Doctor with a clearer idea of the treatment options available.
Text Box: Orthotic management
Text Box: Many Sports injuries can be effectively treated with foot orthotic devices. The most important aspect of orthotic management is a detailed assessment of the condition. This includes:

This information determines the exact manufacturing specifications. Through the right combination of support and cushioning, stress to the inflamed or mal-aligned area can be significantly reduced. This in turn reduces pain and can enable return to normal activities and training. Given proper orthotic management, noticeable improvement should take place within 6 weeks. If treatment has been significantly delayed this may take longer.
