Text Box: When receiving pedorthic care and treatment, it will take you some time to get used to your new footwear and / or foot orthoses. Unless otherwise indicated by your Pedorthist, we recommend that you start by wearing your new footwear / orthoses for about 3 to 4 hours on the first day. Every subsequent day, you should increase the wear by 1 to 2 hours. After a week, everything should feel more comfortable. If at anytime, your pain or discomfort is intensified, stop wearing your footwear / orthoses and contact your Pedorthist.
Common symptoms experienced in the first week include, minor discomfort in the feet and lower legs. If these symptoms become intolerable, remove your footwear / orthoses and go the rest of the day without them. The next day, start wearing them again and follow the time schedule mentioned above.
We also recommend that you be patient. Relief of your original symptoms can take several weeks, even months. Your Pedorthist is there to guide you and help you get better. A successful treatment may also need to involve other health professionals. It is important for you to maintain a good dialogue with your Pedorthist so he or she can try and incorporate these disciplines and therapies into your treatment plan by reporting back to your Physician.
With proper care and maintenance, custom-made foot orthoses will last between 2 and 5 years. For more details, talk to you Pedorthist.
