Getting Used to Your Orthotic

Any change to your body’s mechanics can cause soreness and discomfort if you don’t allow your body to gradually adapt. So don’t be surprised that it can take from two to four weeks to adjust to your new foot orthotics. And it could take even longer if you are suffering from a painful condition. Often, the underlying problem has to be correct first and this can mean a longer healing time.

To help reduce the adjustment time, do:

  • Remove any sock liner from shoes you’re going to wear your orthotic in.
  • Wear your orthotic for only 2-3 hours the first day.
  • On the second day, increase the time wearing it to 3-4 hours. If you start to experience discomfort, shorten the time span.
  • Each day afterwards, add 1 hour to the wearing time. If after 5 or 6 days, you haven’t felt discomfort, you can now wear your orthotic as much as you want.
  • If you do experience discomfort which does’t go away within 3-4 days, stop wearing the orthotic and contact us. We’ll book you for a check up with the pedorthist who will examine your foot and your orthotic and make adjustments if needed.
  • Problems and Cautions

When you first get your orthotics:

  • Do not wear orthotics for any competitive or strenuous activity until you are sure that they are comfortable.

  • If the orthotics are designed for a specific shoe type, be careful if trying them in different shoe types or heel heights unless you have asked the Pedorthist whether this is advisable.
  • In most cases you should not have to buy a larger shoe to fit the devices, especially if your shoes have a removable liner or are “orthotic friendly.”
  • Orthotics may take several weeks of wear before you see their effectiveness. However, within two weeks, you should have a sense that they are helping. In some cases, it may take as much as two months before you feel the full therapeutic impact.
  • If at any time you encounter any soreness, unresolved pressure, blisters or poor balance, reduce wear time and contact us for advice or an adjustment.
